April 2022. Review av of the retrospective printed matter Crossroads. Collaborations. Shortcomings. Henrik Nygren Design 1991–2021, published by HND, in Form No. 2, by Bo Madestrand. ”Inside the Mirror Room. Henrik Nygren's new book is self-reflective but fine. Eight years ago, the graphic designer Henrik Nygren published a slightly delayed monograph on his own business during twenty years. One can understand that it took time to put together, with an extent just under a thousand pages, it was a heavy brick that testified to both the author's extensive work and a certain need for self-assertion. Of course, this is something he is not alone in. When the design agency Stockholm Design Lab, current with an exhibition at ArkDes in Stockholm, turned twenty a year or so ago, they celebrated with a bold coffee table book of over 600 pages with texts by, among others, the undersigned and a number of other design writers. When design offices describe their own business in that way, it fulfills a dual purpose, the new book becomes both a reinforcement of their own brand and another title to add to their portfolio. It's a bit like when architects build houses for themselves, a way to test new ideas without regard to an external client's expectations, while at the same time going the whole hog or as far as their own wallet lasts. Now, in conjunction with Henrik Nygren celebrating 30 years as a designer in his own name, he has created a new tribute to himself. But this time the format is completely different - a very narrow, fairly thin printed matter without binding or hard covers. The awkward format is puzzling, but when you open the book, it turns out that the narrow sides together form square spreads. In one of Lars Forsberg's texts in the book, it is explained that the measurements were inspired by the tatami rugs of 90 x 180 centimeters that together create the basis for the Japanese architecture's proportionate harmonious space. As a designer, Nygren joins the minimalist rational school, with a clear logical structure, functional fonts from modernism's toolbox and generous white paper surfaces. The indictment is cool, but accurate. However, a certain sentimentality is found in the texts, which summarize both Nygren's professional work and his personal biography – where growing up on Gotland provides a foundation for his aesthetics. The image selection comes from projects Nygren has worked on over the years, photographers such as Dawid and Mikael Jansson as well as visual artists such as Agnes Martin and Marina Abramovic flicker past, as well as the architects Sigurd Lewerentz and Gunnar Asplund. Here is also a tribute to the graphic designer John Melin, whose innovative design made a strong impression on Henrik Nygren. And where the previous book took its place on the shelf in width, it is all the more difficult to find a place on the height for the sequel.”
March 2022. Text and review in the magazine Tecknaren, under the heading "Essä: Formens många fält", by Pontus Dahlman. "...So I finally get a freshly printed book in my hand, a summary of the activities of a third of our highly regarded graphic designer, with the title: Crossroads. Collaborations. Shortcomings. Henrik Nygren Design 1991–2021. The special thing about it is partly the shape: that it is unstapled, and quite large but that its generous open surface is due to the fact that it stretches in height and not in width. Then there's the text, which is in the form of a script for a never-realized feature film. Complete with stage directions, third-person narration of Henrik Nygren, and what are said to be transcripts from tape recordings made by the graphic designer himself. A screenwriters have been hired, one learns (I finally find Lars Forsberg's name in the colophon). There is a slippage here, on a meta-level. That is, a feeling that, not the biographical material itself and the actual information, but well its screenplay framework is a fiction. A leap out of the grasp of fiction. Henrik Nygren also talks in the script about his own ongoing artistic project, which is said to be about 'tracks in nature' with hints of 'abandoned railways on Gotland'. Form experiments that he actually intended to give a glimpse of on the cover of this book, but that he was 'filled with the sick pallor of reflection...'. I get the feeling that he will soon skip that afterthought and show works from a further expanded field.”. To read the text and review, click here.
